Two labourers died of asphyxiation while cleaning the septic tank of a house at Vadugarpet in Kallakudi police station limits in the district on Wednesday.
Police gave the names of the deceased as M. Ganesan, 25, of Kumbakonam and Mukesh Kumar, a native of Bihar. The waste was removed from the septic tank using a machine. Subsequently, Ganesan was engaged in cleaning the tank when he suffered difficulty in breathing after inhaling toxic gas and got trapped inside.
Mukesh Kumar attempted to rescue Ganesan and he too was affected by the toxic gas. Both died of asphyxiation on the spot.
Fire and Rescue Services personnel retrieved the bodies from the septic tank. The bodies were shifted to Lalgudi Government Hospital for autopsy. Kallakudi police are investigating, said police sources.
