Shams Mulani has spent the better part of five years knocking on the doors of the Indian team. The Mumbai left-arm spinner has piled up wickets, contributed with the bat and recently earned the Player of the Series award in India A’s first-class series against Australia A. Yet, a senior India call-up remains elusive.

The 29-year-old, however, is in no mood to let the wait get the better of him.

“I am really proud to be playing for Mumbai, and I enjoy playing. There is a different pressure altogether because of the bench strength we have. You cannot afford to lack anywhere when you are playing for Mumbai,” Mulani said after helping the 42-time champions begin their Ranji Trophy campaign with an innings-and-155-run victory over Chandigarh at the Wankhede Stadium.

“I don’t take any game for granted. I try to perform in every game and give my best to the team. The door has not opened yet, but I am a patient guy. I will keep working hard and putting up performances. Hopefully, one day it opens.”

Closing in on 300 First Class wickets, Mulani is gradually transitioning from a seasoned domestic professional to a veteran of the circuit. His spin partner Tanush Kotian, also an all-rounder, finds himself in a similar position, with both continuing to make their case through consistent performances.

Mulani admits that disappointment is natural when opportunities pass by, but credits the support of his teammates and coaches for keeping him grounded.

“There are times when you feel you should have got a chance on a tour. You might get disappointed somewhere, because that is human nature. But my job is to keep performing for Mumbai. I am proud to do that, and I will continue doing so,” he said.

The left-arm spinner has also sought feedback from coaches, including those with India A, on what he needs to do to reach the next level.

Mulani was particularly pleased to share the workload with Kotian as Mumbai wrapped up the Chandigarh fixture inside three days. “Tanush and I enjoy bowling together. Whenever we get an opportunity to bowl together, we end up taking wickets as well,” he said.
