Poverty did not tempt a poor woman from keeping with herself a stack of currency notes, worth ₹1 lakh, which she had found lying on the road, but handed it over to Srivilliputtur Police station on Friday.
While walking on East Car Street near the Andal temple car parking, the woman Lakshmi, 44, had noticed a small bag falling on the road from a speeding bike. The woman, who is working as a worker in a nearby hotel, attempted to draw the attention of the biker by shouting. However, the biker had sped away.
Later, when she lifted the bag, she found a bundle of currency notes inside it. Without a second thought, the woman walked straight to Srivilliputtur Town police station and handed it over to Sub-Inspector of Police M. Murugaraj.
Later, during enquiry, the police found that one Pitchaimani of Mariammankoil Street had lost the bag. He had drawn the money from the post-office and had left the small bag on the hook of the bike. However, the bag had fallen down.
The money was restored to the owner.
The woman was honoured by the police and social activitists for her honesty.
