Following rise in temperatures in Mangaluru, a special ward with 10 beds has been set up on the fifth floor of the super-speciality block of Government Wenlock Hospital for treating heatstroke victims.

In a press note, hospital superintendent D.S. Shivaprakash said those found with 40 degrees Celsius and above body temperature, and facing symptoms, namely losing consciousness and disorientation, can call 108 to get necessary medical attention.

Those suffering from heatstroke should immediately approach doctors for treatment. The victim should be immediately shifted to a shady place. He/she should be immersed in a cold water tub or in ice-cold water, which will immediately bring down the body heat.

The head of the victim should be covered with a wet towel. Ice-pack should be placed around the neck, back, and inner sides of the thighs. Fan should be switched on to allow the ice to go away in the form of vapour. If the victim does not regain consciousness, he/she should be given water or electrolytes. He/she should not be given caffeine or liqour. Victims should not be made to wear tight clothes.

In these sunny conditions, people should make a habit of drinking water, tender coconut water or electrolytes at regular intervals. People should limit their outdoor activities between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Children, elderly persons and pets should not be made to sit in cars parked in the open. When working or doing exercise in the open, people should take rest at regular intervals under shade.

Helplines 7483035127, 8217662885, 9945927253 and 9167607879 can be used to get necessary assistance, Dr. Shivaprakash stated..
