Vehicular traffic, in all probability, will remain suspended for at least 10 more days between Mettupalayam and Burliyar stretch of Mettupalayam-Udhagamandalam Road that was ravaged by a landslip due to heavy rainfall on October 24, 2026.
The stretch that has been witnessing massive restoration work by the State Highways Department (NH wing) could remain inaccessible for a larger duration in the event of further damages in the ongoing sporadic spells of rainfall, according to the official sources.
The Department is in the process of removing boulders perched dangerously in the Mettupalayam-Burliyar stretch. Simultaneously, the damaged section near Burliyar in the border of Coimbatore-Nilgiris districts is witnessing a major restoration work, sources said.
The Department will, in the future, carry out permanent work to prevent landslips based on recommendations of a consultant, they added.
District Collectors of the Nilgiris and Coimbatore are closely monitoring the restoration works.
