The Delhi High Court on Monday (November 2, 2026) stayed the Jawaharlal Nehru University’s (JNU) decision to terminate the services of Congress MP and professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam over allegations of sexual harassment.
Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani passed an interim order while hearing a petition filed by Mr. Akoijam challenging his dismissal. The court also issued notice to the university and listed the matter for further hearing in January 2027.

Mr. Akoijam, who represents the Inner Manipur constituency in the Lok Sabha, taught at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences.
At least 11 female students complained about Mr. Akoijam in May this year. As per reports, the complainants alleged that the professor invited students to his campus residence on the pretext of meetings or gatherings and attempted to harass them sexually. Some students alleged that he also made obscene and inappropriate remarks in class.
The university had dismissed him with immediate effect on October 9 following an inquiry into sexual harassment complaints filed by several women students.

The termination order, signed by Vice Chancellor Santishree D. Pandit, said the university’s internal complaints committee had conducted an inquiry and recommended disciplinary action based on its findings.
“Upon following the due process and considering all available facts and as per the report of the Internal Committee, the punishment of dismissal from the services of the university is hereby imposed,” the order stated.
The dismissal order cited the relevant service rules and Rule 11(ix) of the Central Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules while imposing the punishment.

Mr. Akoijam has denied the allegations and described the proceedings as politically motivated, while alleging procedural lapses in the inquiry.
The Delhi Police has also registered an FIR in connection with the allegations, and its investigation is underway.
