The ‌board of Tata Sons reportedly approved a fresh five-year term ‌for N. Chandrasekaran as executive ‌chairman, ‌a source familiar with the matter said on Thursday (September 17, 2026), reversing his ‌decision last month not to seek reappointment.

The reasons for ‌the change were not immediately clear, the source added.

Mr. Chandrasekaran, whose current term ‌ends in February 2027, said last month he would not ‌seek another term. The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, which controls 27.9% holdings in Tata Sons, had then accepted his resignation and initiated process to search for his successor.

Mr. Chandrasekaran has spent 40 years with the Tata Group and nine critical years at the helm of the conglomerate, the first non-Parsi to hold the post.
