The Valliyoor police have arrested one person in connection with the murder of Kannanallur village panchayat president Maharajan on Friday.
Police said a protest-like situation evolved near the house of Kannanallur village panchayat president S. Maharajan on Thamaraikulam south street on Friday evening following erratic drinking water supply to the residents.
One of the affected residents Esakkiappan, 40, of the same street picked-up a heated argument with pump operator Shankar in this connection. When Maharajan arrived at the spot and tried to pacify them, Esakkiyappan quarrelled with the panchayat president.
At one point, Esakkiyappan allegedly attacked Maharajan with a brick and fled the spot on his bike.
With head injury, Maharajan was rushed to a private hospital in Parapadi. After examining the condition of the victim, the doctors there referred him to the Nanguneri Government Hospital. However, the doctors in the government hospital declared him ‘brought dead’.
Superintendent of Police Vishwesh Balasubramaniam Shastri rushed to the spot. Subsequently, the police detained Esakkiyappan at night.
“Esakkiyappan, irked over the erratic drinking water supply, had been raising the issue with pump operator Shankar. When the argument crossed all limits, it led to hurling of a brick at Maharajan due to which he died. The Valliyoor police are investigating if there was any prior enmity between Esakkiyappan and Maharajan that led to the murder,” Mr. Shastri said.
Police personnel have been deployed at Thamaraikulam to avert untoward incidents.
