Moderate to heavy rains, which lashed the city on Thursday night and on Friday, resulted in flooding in several places in Mangaluru.

According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, 93.5 mm of rainfall was recorded in Bala village, Mangaluru taluk, between 8.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m. on Friday, making it the highest in the region.

In the same period, Yekkaru recorded 86 mm, Aikala 83.5 mm, Surathkal 83 mm, Gurupura 76.5 mm, Krishnapura 72.5 mm, Neermarga 72.5 mm, Mulky 67 mm, Katipalla 58.5 mm, Panjikallu and Pachhanady 56.5 mm, Markada 55 mm, Kilpady 51.5 mm, Karopady 50 mm, Padil 49 mm, Pudu 48 mm, Boliyaru 46.5 mm, Thumbe 44.5 mm, and Moodbidri recorded 40.2 mm of rainfall.

Many regions of the Baikampady Industrial Area in the city were flooded, which affected not only the operations of industrial units but also the traffic movement within the area on Friday morning, with some roads inundated with water reaching knee-depth.

Run-off water flowed into several houses adjoining the Mangaluru-Moodbidri stretch of the National Highway in Gurupura Kaikamba. Flooding was also reported at Kuloor Junction in Mangaluru.

Flooding was reported from Ambedkar Colony in Madya, near Surathkal. Incident commanders rushed to the spot to clear choke points. Similar action was taken in Katipalla, off Krishnapura Main Road. Relief personnel also removed branches of a tree that had fallen across the road in Ashok Nagar, near Urwa Market.

A 30-member team of NDRF has been stationed in Puttur to address natural disaster-related problems.

Very heavy rain with thunder showers is expected across the Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada regions between 8.30 a.m. on June 6 and 8.30 a.m. on June 12, the India Meteorological Department said.
