CM Rekha Gupta says four new waste-to-energy plants will be set up to prevent garbage from piling up again.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has said her government has taken several scientific measures to tackle the Capital’s legacy waste problem and reclaimed approximately 100 acres across the Okhla, Bhalswa and Ghazipur landfill sites so far.
She said 70 lakh metric tonnes of waste had been processed at the Okhla landfill and about 35 acres reclaimed. At Bhalswa, 102 lakh metric tonnes had been processed and about 45 acres reclaimed, while at Ghazipur, 44 lakh metric tonnes had been processed and about 20 acres reclaimed.
The inert material generated during waste processing is being used for road construction and to fill low-lying areas, the Chief Minister said.
“The lifestyle of those who live around it has improved and property rates in the area surrounding the landfills have also gone up,” Ms. Gupta said in a video.
To prevent garbage from piling up again, the government is introducing four new waste-to-energy plants to ensure that waste generated in the city is processed immediately, she said.
The Okhla and Bhalswa landfills have a December 2026 deadline for clearance, while the Municipal Corporation of Delhi aims to clear the Ghazipur landfill by the end of 2027, Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi had announced last month.
Development works
The Chief Minister also announced a series of works to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday on September 17, covering sanitation, water and sewerage systems, traffic, education, power and civic facilities.
“Our government is resolved to ensure that the benefits of development reach every area and every section of Delhi,” Ms. Gupta said.
