Farmers arrested in Tiruppur for preventing work on IDPL project of BPCL

Farmers arrested in Tiruppur for preventing work on IDPL project of BPCL

Posted on August 29, 2026 By admin

Farmers were arrested by the police when they prevented the work on IDPL (Irugur to Devanagonthi Pipeline) project at Poosaripalayam in Kandiankovil panchayat, on Saturday (August 29, 2026), demanding higher compensation.

Twenty four farmers – 12 men and 12 women – were arrested and detained in a community hall along the Palladam-Dharapuram Road, where they have been in a hunger fast till late night.

The farmers said they have decided to continue their protest at the venue, and that they will not move out even with the issuance of a release order.

After their arrest, the work was carried out under police protection.

The farmers, sources said, have decided to sustain their protest at the work site every day.

The proposed pipeline is planned through a private land to a stretch of 74 km in Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts, along an existing Right of Use alignment.

The Government had initially fixed compensation at the rate of 20% of the market value for the additional land, and subsequently increased it to 100%, as a special case.

As this revision was not acceptable to the farmers, the BPCL had agreed to pay additional relief of ₹5 lakh per acre, over and above 100% market rate, that works out to 125%, for both dry and wet agricultural land. As per the latest order, the compensation for residential and industrial land categories would continue to remain at 100% of market value.

Terming the compensation announced by the Government as a “pittance”, N. Ramesh, Tiruppur District Secretary of Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Protection Movement said the project will be prevented until the compensation is raised to 500% of the market value.
