A 29-year-old Nepal native accused in the killing of the wife of a retired IPS officer at their Prashasan Nagar residence has been detained under the Preventive Detention (PD) Act by the Hyderabad City Police.
Sunil Bahadur Aauji alias Sunil Pariyar, a car driver from Navi Mumbai and native of Achham district in Nepal, was detained on Tuesday (August 11) under Section 3(2) of the Telangana Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act, 1986.
Aauji is one of the accused in the killing of 62-year-old Tanuja Ranjan, wife of retired IPS officer Ray Vinay Ranjan, at their residence within the limits of Jubilee Hills police station on May 8.
According to the police, Aauji and his associates allegedly hatched a conspiracy, trespassed into the residence, restrained and suffocated Ms. Ranjan to death, and escaped with gold ornaments and other valuables.
He was arrested on May 22 and remanded in judicial custody. The case was registered as Crime No. 307 of 2026 at Jubilee Hills police station under Sections 103(1), 309(2) and 317(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The police said Aauji had also figured in two other criminal cases registered in 2024, one at A Division police station in Jamnagar district of Gujarat and another at Naigaon police station in Maharashtra.
The detention order was issued by the Hyderabad Commissioner of Police on August 10. The police said the decision was taken after considering the nature and gravity of the alleged offences and the material placed before the competent authority.
Aauji was detained and lodged under the PD Act on Tuesday.
