The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has cleaned up and transformed several waste dumping spots and a location used for open urination as part of its ‘Swachhata Abhiyan–2026: 80 Garbage-Free Spots’ campaign organised to mark the 80th Independence Day.

At Ananthaswamy Park near the Nityotsava Kalyana Mantapa in Krishnamurthypuram, Ward 60 of Zone 2, around 60 people participated in the cleanliness drive and removed nearly six tonnes of waste. Former Mayor Purushotham, former corporators, Zone Assistant Commissioner Girish, Assistant Executive Engineer Meenakshi, MCC officials and staff, and residents took part in the drive.

On the T. Narasipur Main Road in Zone 9, around 30 people removed nearly two tonnes of waste. Officials and staff of Zone 9 and residents participated in the drive.

Similarly, around 35 people took part in a cleanliness drive on the road behind Holy Saint School in Gayatripuram, Ward 39, and removed nearly one tonne of waste. Environmental engineers, Zone 9 officials and staff, and residents participated.

A total of 125 people participated in the cleanliness drives at the three locations, removing around nine tonnes of waste.

As part of the campaign, a spot on Sayyaji Rao Road where people were openly urinating was also completely cleaned and transformed. The walls were painted, and awareness messages and signboards were installed. Flower pots were placed to beautify the area, while the operating hours of a nearby public toilet were extended for public convenience.

MCC Commissioner Savita M.K., Executive Engineer Mrutyunjaya K.S., Zone 6 Assistant Commissioner Prathibha, Environmental Engineer Maithri, Health Inspectors Basavaraju and Manjunath, supervisors, pourakarmikas, nearby shopkeepers, and street vendors participated in the initiative.

The MCC said the transformed locations would be monitored continuously to prevent people from dumping waste or urinating in the open again. Heavy fines would be imposed, as per the rules, on those found littering public places or resorting to open urination, the civic body said in a press release.
