A 16-year-old Class XII student was killed after a motorcycle she was on crashed into a barricade near a roadwork site on Ennore Expressway on Wednesday night.
The police said the girl, a resident of Thangal in Tiruvottiyur and a student of a government-aided school in Kaladipet, was riding pillion on the two-wheeler being driven by her classmate, also aged 16. The motorcycle reportedly struck a barricade put up around an underground manhole work area, causing both riders to be thrown onto the road.
The girl reportedly fell in the path of a container lorry and was run over. She was rushed to the Stanley Government Hospital, where she later died of injuries despite medical treatment. Her classmate suffered minor injuries.
Following the accident, the lorry driver allegedly abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. The police have launched a search for him and are reviewing CCTV camera footage from the areas as part of the investigation.
Residents stage protest
The incident triggered protests from residents, who alleged that barricades, piles of sand, and construction debris had been left unattended on the roadway after civic work, posing a serious risk to motorists. They called for action against the officials and contractors responsible for maintaining safety at the site. The police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances that led to the fatal crash.
