Young dreams of winning another series in India

Young dreams of winning another series in India

Posted on January 9, 2026 By admin

After being adjudged Player of the Series for a standout batting performance in challenging conditions as New Zealand pulled off a historic Test series whitewash in India at the end of 2024, Will Young has returned to familiar territory. This time, however, the setting is limited-overs cricket, with Young hopeful that a new-look New Zealand side can once again achieve the unthinkable.

New Zealand’s 3-0 Test series victory — the first time India had been whitewashed in a three-Test series at home — remains one of the most remarkable results in recent cricket history. As the Black Caps gear up for a three-match ODI series, Young stressed that the memories of that triumph continue to fuel belief within the camp.

“Obviously it’s a different format from the last time we were here, but the Black Caps have played some great one-day cricket at home against England and the West Indies,” Young said on Friday at the Baroda Cricket Association Stadium. “It’s a great opportunity to come over to India with a slightly different side. The dream is to win another series over here in India.”

One of the senior members of the touring party, Young described the 2024 series win — and his Player of the Series award — as a defining moment in his career. “That series is right at the top for me,” he said, acknowledging the significance of performing in Indian conditions against a formidable opponent.

However, Young also conceded that the importance of the ODI series could be overshadowed by the looming T20 World Cup, which begins in just four weeks. “Especially with the T20 World Cup around the corner, it is easy for a series like this to get lost in the bigger context,” he said.

Yet, the 31-year-old emphasised the need to remain grounded. “Cricket teaches you to be where your feet are. That’s exactly what this series is about — being present and playing against an incredible Indian side,” he said. “Those opportunities don’t come around every day, so we’re really excited by that prospect.”

For New Zealand, the immediate focus may be on preparation, but belief — forged by history — clearly remains intact.
