Heavy smoke emanated from Chennai Port on Tuesday (June 2, 2026) morning reportedly as a result of the sulphur stored within one of the yards reacting to the intense heat of the sun during the day, sources said.

Around 11 a.m., the sulphur granules imported by one of the firms for its usage in fertiliser, started emanating smoke. “Due to increasing temperature and the heat, the sulphur particles in the yard began to produce heavy smoke. This kind of chemical reaction will occur during summer. The situation has been brought under control now. No one was injured in the incident,” a source said.

Three fire tenders rushed to the spot as soon dense smoke emerged from the yard and was doused in a while. However commuters in the neighbouring areas including the Secretariat found it difficult to walk and travel in the port area due to the smoke.

A layer of white smoke engulfed Kamarajar Salai near the Secretariat in Chennai on Tuesday following a suspected gas leak from a nearby area.

The smoke spread across the four-wheeler parking area opposite the Secretariat and nearby locations.
