Democrat Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat on Tuesday (November 4, 2026), according to media projections, becoming the first Muslim elected to the chamber and preserving a crucial Democratic seat in the party’s fight for Senate control.

His victory denied Republicans the chance to fill the seat left vacant by retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters. The 42-year-old former public health official ran on a progressive platform focused on lowering costs for working families and reducing corporate influence in politics.

His win marked a breakthrough for the Democratic Party’s progressive wing ‌in this closely contested midterm election cycle.

Early life, education and background

Abdul El-Sayed was born on October 31 , 1984, in Rochester Hills, Michigan, U.S.. He attended public schools, where he captained his high school football, wrestling and lacrosse teams. He was raised by his father, Mohamed, an Egyptian immigrant and his stepmom, Jackie, whose family has lived in Gratiot County, Michigan since the 1800s. Mr. El-Sayed earned his undergraduate degree with the highest distinction from the University of Michigan where he also played on the Wolverine men’s lacrosse team. He went on to earn a medical degree from Columbia University under an NIH-funded fellowship, as well as a second doctorate from Oxford University as Rhodes Scholer.

He lives in Ann Arbor with his wife, Dr. Sarah Jukaku and their two daughters.

Public heath experience and leadership

Although trained as a physician, M\Mr. El-Sayed shifted his focus to public service after realising the political systemic issues that was deteriorating public health, according to his campaign website.

He rebuilt Detroit’s Health Department after bankruptcy and led Wayne County’s Department of Health. Human & Veterans Services, serving 1.8 million residents. His public service spans several achievements, including securing free eyeglasses for children, targeting major environmental polluters, making the life-saving Narcan universally accessible and pioneering a programme projected to cancel up to $700 million in medical debt for 3,00,000 Michiganders, as per the website.

He authored Medicare for All: A Citizen’s Guide and served on former President Biden’s 2020 Unity Task Force for Healthcare to help develop policies aimed at lowering prescription drug costs. His public service earned him recognition as “Public Official of the Year” by the Michigan LCV and also a spot on Crain’s Detroit Business 40 Under 40 list.

First Muslim U.S. Senator-elect

Mr. El-Sayed won the U.S. Senate seat in Michigan over former Republican lawmaker Mike Rogers, making him the first Muslim elected to the upper chamber of Congress. He launched his campaign to lower living costs and ensure government agencies serve working people rather than billionaires.

Mr. Rogers, 63, ‌a former Congressman and FBI agent, entered the race with strong backing from President Trump and national Republicans and sought to cast Mr. El-Sayed as a radical candidate sympathetic to Islamic extremism through alleged ties to the Muslim ‌Brotherhood, claims that El-Sayed denies and that remain unsupported by evidence. Democrats said the attacks on El-Sayed relied on Islamophobic tropes, according to Reuters.

Mr. Rogers also devoted significant effort to courting Jewish voters who may have been uneasy with El-Sayed’s opposition to U.S. military ‌aid for Israel and his characterisation of Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide.

But Mr. Rogers struggled to overcome voter concerns about the economy and President Trump’s low ratings. In the closing weeks of the race, he broke with the President on the war in Iran and the ‌US trade dispute with Canada, arguing that ending both was necessary to help bring down costs for businesses and consumers.
