Urvil Patel’s savage maiden First Class double century (210 not out, 227b, 17×4, 6×6) and the opening burst from the Gujarat medium-pacers left Kerala on the ropes at the end of the second day’s play in the Ranji Trophy Elite Group C match at the Narendra Modi Stadium here on Tuesday.

Kerala, in reply to Gujarat’ first innings total of 534 for nine declared, was reduced to 74 for three with captain Vishnu Vinod (21 batting) and Sachin Baby (14 batting) surviving a nervy half-an-hour before stumps.

Earlier, left-arm medium-pacer Arzan Nagwaswalla (two for 24) and Chintan Gaja (one for 30) dismantled Kerala’s top-order to drive home the advantage after the visitor reeled under a sensational assault by Urvil Patel before the tea break.

Earlier, in the morning, the overnight pair of Urvil and Vishal Jayswal seamlessly continued from where they left off on Monday. The duo put the Kerala attack under pressure by finding boundaries quite easily. Urvil continued to plunder runs against the spinners and picked out Aditya Sarvate for special treatment. Vishal was run-out for 77 following a mix-up with his partner. N.P. Basil briefly lifted the Kerala spirits by trapping Gaja in front for one.

However, debutant Amit Desai showed no nerves and proved to be an ideal ally for Urvil. Amit (36) also produced the big hits and helped Urvil add 78 runs for the eighth wicket before he became Saravte’s second victim.

There was no respite for Kerala as a defiant Siddharth Desai (18) joined Urvil to add 82 runs for the ninth wicket. Urvil changed gears as he neared the milestone, putting the Kerala attack to sword to reach his double century off 214 balls with a single off Sarvate.
