On November 1, 2024, the concrete canopy of the Novi Sad Railway station in Serbia came crashing down, killing 16 people. Two of the youngest victims were just six years old. What began as grief and mourning over a tragedy has since brought an end to 14 years of rule by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), led by Aleksandar Vučić.

Before the collapse, the Novi Sad railway station had recently been reconstructed as part of a major state-funded project, backed by China’s Belt and Road Initiative, to upgrade the railway line between Belgrade and Budapest for high-speed rail services. Outrage over the shoddy reconstruction led to allegations of corruption and government negligence, which resulted in widespread protests.
