ISRO NVS-03 launch: 5 things to know about India’s new navigation satellite

India’s independent regional navigation satellite system NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) was restored to its minimum operational configuration of four satellites on Friday (October 30, 2026) as ISRO successfully launched its 2,250 kg navigation satellite NVS-03 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

The satellite successfully separated from the launch vehicle and was injected into its intended Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO). The satellite is the third in ISRO’s next-generation navigation satellite series, envisaged to ensure continuity of navigation services under the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). This mission aims to revive and modernise NavIC.

Here’s what to know about India’s new navigation satellite, NVS-03, with a mission life of 12 years.

Restoring a weakened NavIC network

NavIC requires at least 4 active satellites to provide positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) services. Following clock failures on older satellites and failure of NVS-02 to reach its final orbit, the operational fleet shrank to just 3 satellites. Placing NVS-03 into orbit provided the fourth satellite needed to restore standalone navigation services.

Upgraded indegenous atomic clocks

Atomic clocks are central to satellite navigation and helps calculate exact distances by measuring signal travel time.

Older IRNSS satellites relied on imported Swiss clocks that repeatedly failed. NVS-03 carries a indigenously developed Rubidium atomic clock (developed by ISRO’s Space Applications Centre) alongside imported ones. This moves India closer to full self reliance in high precision space timing.

L1 Brand integration for common smartphones

NVS-03 transmits on the L1 frequency band in addition to the existing L5 and S bands. The L1 band is widely used in commercial GPS receivers, which will make it easier for everyday mobile chipsets to access Indian Standard Time and NavIC positioning signals. The system is designed to provide coverage over India’s landmass and an area extending 1,500 kilometres beyond its geopolitical boundary.

Civilian and Defence applications

NavIC offers two main services: an open signal for public navigation, mapping and logistics, and an encrypted restricted service for the military.

The latter provides high-precision data essential for guiding missiles, tracking troop movements and operating defence platforms safely, practically acting as a strategic asset for India.

Elaborating on NavIC’s civilian applications, the ISRO chief V. Narayanan said 10,400 locomotives and 64,000 fishing vessels are currently tracked in real time. Under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, the agency aims to expand this to 1 lakh fishing vessels within the next six months. In total, 15 lakh tracking devices have been fitted across vehicles. When asked when NavIC would be available on civilian mobile phones, Narayanan stated this would happen once the full seven-satellite constellation is completed.

History

India began developing NavIC after Global Positioning System (GPS) access was restricted by the U.S. during the 1999 Kargil War. The first-generation IRNSS satellites were launched between 2013 and 2018, with nine satellites launched during that period. The newly launched NVS-03 brings the total of the entire NavIC programme to 12 satellites.

Operating an independent regional satellite system will ensure India’s positioning and timing capabilities remain secure during geopolitical conflicts.

“India has got a navigation programme. And as per the programme, we are supposed to provide navigation services for India plus 1,500 kilometres from the Indian border, called the Regional Navigation Service. For that, seven satellites are supposed to be in orbit,” Mr. Narayanan said.

He said NVS-03 was the fourth satellite launched under the programme and added that the entire constellation would have to be completed before the navigation service could be integrated with mobile systems for wider public use.

Highlighting the significance of the indigenous atomic clock onboard the satellite, Mr. Narayanan said two such clocks were already functioning in orbit, and the third had now been placed in space.

The GSLV-F18 was the 20th flight of India’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle.
