A 26-year-old man, who allegedly befriended a resident of Anna Nagar and stayed at his house before stealing his gold jewellery and cash, has been arrested.

The arrested man was identified as Tharun, 26, of KCB Colony in Tiruvottiyur. According to the police, Satheesh Kumar, 36, of Anna Nagar East, lives separately from his wife and son due to differences with his wife. He runs two businesses.

Around three months ago, Satheesh Kumar met Tharun at a relative’s function. Tharun, who claimed to run a business in Hyderabad, told him that he stayed in star hotels whenever he visited Chennai for business.

On September 17, Tharun contacted Satheesh Kumar and sought permission to stay at his house for two days, claiming that he had completed his business in Chennai. Satheesh Kumar agreed, and Tharun stayed at the house for about 10 days.

Suspecting Tharun’s activities, Satheesh Kumar checked the gold jewellery and cash kept in his bureau and found them missing. He lodged a complaint with the crime wing of Anna Nagar police station.

A police team led by the crime wing inspector secured Tharun and questioned him. The police said he had allegedly made duplicate keys for the bureau and locker and gradually stole the jewellery and cash while staying at the house. The stolen jewellery was sold, and the proceeds were used to repay debts and meet lavish expenses, the police said.

Tharun was arrested and 25 sovereigns of gold jewellery and ₹14 lakh in cash were recovered from him. The police also found that a criminal case had earlier been registered against him in the Tambaram Forest Range.
