Inside South India’s bars: How design and architecture are changing the drinking experience

Inside South India’s bars: How design and architecture are changing the drinking experience

Posted on September 26, 2026 By admin

India has three bars in Asia’s 50 Best Bars list in 2026: Boilermaker (Goa), Soka, and Bar Spirit Forward (Bengaluru) for their flair and inventive cocktails. But the drinks are not the only focus. Across the country, bars have upped their design game as well, with a focus on architectural storytelling, acoustic comfort, daytime adaptability and a spotlight on the ergonomic bar counter itself.

We take a look at six bars across South India, over five metrics: materiality, bar design, convenience, acoustic-lighting design and, finally, daytime adaptability.

No Name, Chennai

Studio Kaleidospace, a Chennai-based interior design studio helmed by Daphne D’mello and Nirali Bathia, created a 1,500-sq.ft. resto-bar, No Name, in Nandanam. Generous arches, an electric blue bar, and stained glass windows punctuate a large hall with architectural drama.

Architectural style and materiality

The arches were born of the two large beams that interrupted the ceiling space. “We wanted to hide them and the semi-circular shape was the perfect vehicle. The arches are repeated on the bar, stained glass windows, and form alcoves facing the street,” says Bathia.

The bar

The apron is cloaked in hand-painted, high-polished, electric blue. Framing the wall behind it, is the massive arch that holds a custom-printed canvas of a Renaissance sky. Overlaid on the artwork a bespoke black iron trellis serves as a floating bottle rack.

Acoustic and light design

Intentionally intimate lighting is created with antique brass and cast-iron chandeliers hanging from the timber ceilings. Renaissance-inspired sconces illuminate the low seating arrenagements.

Comfort and convenience

“The wooden flooring patterns are different across the main floor and the DJ area, so patrons don’t slip even if the lighting is dim,” explains D’mello. Mid-century-inspired accent armchairs alongside lounge sofas within the window bays offer comfortable seating with space for storage.

Daytime adaptability

The bar is used for lectures over the weekend.

The Quarter Madras

Tucked away in the historic Savera Hotel, The Quarter Madras, a 50-seater bar starts with a foyer that leads to parlour doors, though not into a speakeasy. As the moniker suggests, it’s a tongue in cheek take on the quarter (180 ml of spirit) and the French ‘Quarter’ sites along the Tamil Nadu coastline.

Architectural style and materiality

The material choices for the bar are rooted in the city. Amita Joy, co-founder, Studio Reve, an interior design studio in the city, explains, “Wood on the ceiling, earthy rattan for the seats and a lot of large chandeliers with fabric, makes the space look dramatic. The use of Madras checks, white- green granite, and old memorabilia of the owner’s family, give it a warm Chennai vibe.”

The bar

“The arches on the wall behind the bar offer a colonial aesthetic. The large library shelving allows us to add books and accessories to dress up the space for a party or event,” says Joy.

Acoustic and light design

Soft music with a retro playlist is on most days. The floor to ceiling velvet drapes, coffered ceiling, wood panelling offer acoustic proofing, while ambient lighting sets the mood for conversations.

Comfort and convenience

“We added coat hooks near the tables and bag hooks underneath so you don’t have to use the floor for storage,” she says.

Daytime adaptability

The space is used for private events booked either for day or night soirees.

Roc-A-Coe

Roc-A-Coe earns its moniker from the famous 1930s-era cocktail (published in the Difford’s Guide) made with dry gin and punchy sherry notes. The 2200 square foot, 80-seater bar on KNK Road, designed by George, principal architect at ING Design, pays homage through its cocktails to old punch houses of yesteryear Madras.

Architecture and materiality

“The bar’s design language uses the triumvirate of balance, rhythm and proportion to pay tribute to the Art Deco era through the use of wood, glass and leather that form the material trinity,” says George.

The bar

The Omakase Bar (where the bartender chooses cocktails based on patrons’ preferences) takes centerstage. “The counter is customised so the staff can easily access spirits, tools, glassware and refrigeration, while maintaining eye contact and conversation with guests,” he says.

Acoustic and light design

The lighting transitions from bright during the day, to a warm glow at night. The upholstered seating, timber surfaces and soft furnishings help absorb sound and reduce reverberation. Speakers are positioned to distribute music evenly across the room, allowing patrons to enjoy DJ sets or live jazz music.

Comfort and convenience

The height of the bar allows bartenders and guests to comfortably reach for a glass. The luxurious upholstered high chairs and wooden benches offer ergonomic comfort.

Daytime adaptability

They host Pint of View (lectures on topics of interest with a beverage covered in the cost) over weekends. The seating is rearranged to face the speaker, with a projector at the far end of the bar, for audio-visual presentations.

Barback, Hyderabad

Named after the most hardworking person behind a bar, Barback in Hitech City, Hyderabad, is a twin space with Fireback, a Thai restaurant that celebrates Bangkok’s vibrant night life, both in its food and aesthetic choices. The 30-seater space translates Bangkok’s street vibe.

Architectural style and materiality

The use of bronze and copper tones, timber, woven textures and sculptural metalwork, celebrate a nocturnal palette. Wavy glass panels generate a sense of movement while a half-moon motif on the floor creates a striking visual focal point. “Arched forms and a dramatic canopy speak the Thai architectural language, while cane details add a sense of local craft and warmth,” explains Russell Sage, principal director, Russell Sage Studio, London.

The bar

It allows multiple bartenders to work across the space comfortably while the brightly lit, open shelving behind the bar keeps glassware easily accessible.

Acoustic and light design

The bronze backdrop comes alive with illumination, allowing the bar to create a natural focal point. For acoustic design, “the combination of upholstered seating, timber, textured surfaces and suspended metal-mesh elements helps break up sound”, explains Sage.

Comfort and convenience

“Tables are positioned to give guests a sense of privacy without compromising the lively atmosphere. Easily accessible spaces for personal belongings and comfortable seating heights ensure functionality is integrated into the design,” adds Sage.

Daytime adaptability

For now, Barback does not host daytime events.

Yaakay Bar and Canteen, Bengaluru

Yaakay means ‘why’ in Kannada, a sort of rhetorical question for an area bar, saying ‘why not’? This is a brainchild of Byg Ventures (founder of Bob’s Bars), Yaakar Bar and Canteen in Sahakar Nagar.

Sujit Nair, principal architect of SDeG Design, a city-based architecture firm, imagined a two-fold space: People’s and Premium, on either side of a courtyard-facing bar, atop a terrace on a commercial building.

A 16-foot-high shed was constructed with an 8.5 foot high parasol roof that provides a sense of space. “The walls in the People’s section wear a hand-trowelled plaster finish, painted in dull white, with polished Kota floors and indigo-blue woodwork reminiscent of old Bengaluru homes. The Premium section has white-inlaid green marble, polished timber seating and decorative metal screens, an ode to older Bengaluru clubs,” says Nair.

The bar

Inspired by ticketing/ concession kiosks in Art Deco theatres, the bar is built with green marble, Kota stone, woodwork and acrylic light boxes, to offer a classy transition between the two sections.

Acoustic and light design

There’s wood wool cladding to maintain reasonable decibel levels, with retro English playlists and regional music on loop.at a comfortable volume. A pendant light over each table offers focussed but soft lighting.

Comfort and convenience

The benches in the People’s section offer extra space for belongings, while seats in the Premium area have a hollow space behind them for storage. Menus are printed on the walls, complementing the wall art that celebrates Bengaluru’s multilingual character, designed by Tonic Design Studio.

Daytime adaptability

Regulars troop in for lunch, savouring a pint and local favourites at affordable prices., and there are no screens to distract from the company.

Brine, Bengaluru

A stark grey building without windows, wrapped in a translucent glass-brick façade, conceals more than it reveals on 80 Foot Road in Indiranagar. Inside, a 5,500 sq.ft., 120-seater, brutalist space shines with a resplendent copper bar, and is lush with Madagascar almond trees and eye-catching lantana sculptures. Brine is named after the technique of using saline (salt water) for preservation.

Architectural style and materiality

Animesh Nayak, founder and principal architect of Open to Sky, an architecture and design firm in Bengaluru and Kolkata, speaks of adaptive reuse (repurposing existing buildings for new functions) as a recurring feature in his practice. Brine, too, came with the bones of an old bungalow. Along with his associate Revathi Ramakrishnan, he says, “[We] used the sinews of the old structure [partitions and walls are maintained to demarcate areas] to fashion a bar with a lofty roof, luminous skylights, a brutalist facade in lime and thoughtful seating.”

The material palette includes natural stone flooring with cobblestone paths to break the monotony, upholstered and rattan seating in warm wood, as well as a masonry bench with seating on both sides. “The walls are purposely bare, with no artwork to distract you from your company or cocktails,” adds the architect. A generous outdoor space maximises the use of trees in the compound to add a natural touch.

The bar

A glistening copper metal sheet wraps around the bar, making it a shimmering centerpiece. Bottles are arranged in groups by colour, with soft lighting to illuminate them. Bar stools offer seating next to the large group area adjacent to it, exuding a Biergarten vibe in the midst of Oktoberfest.

Acoustic and light design

A pre-set playlist of European beats plays without disturbing conversation. Dimmable lamps illuminate the menus, while coloured lights shining through the Indonesian glass-brick façade set the mood by time of day, softer at noon and red-orange at night.

Comfort and convenience

Hooks hidden beneath the bar offer space for coats and handbags, a thoughtful touch. Belongings rest on armrests and benches, while spacing of the tables offers privacy.

Daytime adaptability

Local businesses conduct small group events, as the greenery and high ceilings offer a sense of openness, along with flexible seating arrangements.
