The police have seized around 700 g of hashish oil allegedly being smuggled on an interstate bus and arrested a 27-year-old man in connection with the case.
The arrested man has been identified as Shyam Shashi (27) of Ernakulam.
He was taken into custody during a vehicle inspection jointly conducted by the DANSAF team and Peechi police as part of the ongoing ‘Operation Thufan’ anti-drug drive on Saturday.
The police said Shyam had previously worked as a bus cleaner and helper in Ernakulam city. For the past year, he had reportedly been working as a cleaner with a Bengaluru-based travel company.
According to the police, he allegedly exploited his familiarity with interstate bus operations and used the buses as a means of transporting the contraband while taking advantage of the relative cover provided during travel.
The police are now investigating the source of the seized hashish oil and its intended recipients. A detailed probe is also under way to identify other links allegedly involved in the interstate drug trafficking network.
