As part of the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0, the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules 2026 are set to be implemented in Thoothukudi corporation. Accordingly, an awareness and orientation meeting for corporation councillors was held on Monday.

The meeting was chaired by Thoothukudi Corporation Mayor Jegan Periyasamy and Commissioner S. Priyanka. Corporation Health Officer Ganesh participated and explained the provisions of SWM Rules 2026 and directives issued by the supreme court.

The meeting highlighted the mandatory four stream source of segregation of waste, ward-wise awareness initiatives, implementation plans and the progress made by the Thoothukudi corporation under the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0.

Addressing the meeting, Mr Jegan said that councillors and health department officials should create awareness among the public about the new SWM Rules. He urged the public to refrain from dumping garbage and unwanted materials indiscriminately and to co-operate with the corporation in keeping the city clean.
