Collector R. Revathi on Tuesday held discussions with offcials of Tiruchi Railway Division about the progress of works at Kumbakonam railway station ahead of mahamagam festival in 2008.

At a meeting held at the railway station, the Collector sought completion of passenger amenities works such as installation of escalators, lifts, drinking water facilities, benches on platforms and additional reservation counters well ahead of the festival as lakhs devotees were expected to visit Kumbakonam during the period.

Emphasising the need for an integrated public transport system to handle around three lakh devotees on important days during the festival period, she sought operation of special train services and close coordination between the Railways and the State Transport Department.

She also suggested that Southern Railway consider deft handling of traffic movement at level-crossing gates located in the vicinity of Kumbakonam railway station and positioning of mobile toilets on the railway station premises for the benefit of devotees.

Tiruchi Divisional Railway Manager Balak Ram Negi and other railway officials participated in the discussions and inspection of the ongoing works at the railway station, according to official sources.
