The police will enhance surveillance in and around Kochi city in view of the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday (July 18, 2026) night, with special focus on venues hosting public screening of the Argentina-Spain title clash and areas where post-match celebrations are expected.

Sources with the city police said intensified patrolling had been planned around sports bars, restaurants, clubs, and other locations that had announced live screenings of the final. Additional personnel will be deployed, if required.

Additional traffic management is expected at major junctions and stretches where victory processions or large gatherings of football fans are anticipated.

Areas such as Kakkanad, Kaloor, Edappally, Fort Kochi, and Marine Drive are expected to attract sizeable crowds for the match.

Police sources said the deployment would be scaled up depending on the crowd turnout. Officers said they expected the celebrations to remain peaceful as the finalists do not have the kind of archrival fan bases in the State. “We expect the fans of Argentina on one side and supporters of other teams to come together. However, we don’t expect any clash or untoward incidents. Special attention will be paid to identify any hooligan elements likely to sneak into the crowds,” an officer said.

Several establishments in Kochi, including sports pubs, hotels, and restaurants, have announced live screenings of the World Cup final with special late-night packages for football enthusiasts.

The police vigilance comes days after an argument between supporters of Argentina and Brazil turned violent in Kozhikode, following which two persons were booked.
