The Southern Railway will execute works for various passenger amenities, including the construction of a foot overbridge (FOB) at the Pattabiram Military Siding (PTMS) railway station. This comes in the wake of commuters highlighting poor access amenities to reach the suburban platforms of the railway station.
The Pattabiram Military Siding railway station, which branches off from the Pattabiram railway station, was originally established for defence personnel and transporting defence goods. Over the years, several residential localities have come up inside the defence area, including Muthapudupet and Mittinamelli.
A senior official of the Southern Railway said tender for the construction of a 3 metre wide FOB across seven tracks of the PTMS yard was awarded in May this year at a cost of ₹2.93 crore.
At present, fabrication work for the FOB is under way, with the work to clean up the site for laying the foundation already completed. The work is planned to be completed by March of next year, he added.
The other passenger amenities that the Chennai division of Southern Railway will install include a tactile platform, new seating, and platform shelters.
Consumer activist T. Sadagopan said the Pattabiram Military Siding railway station is one of the oldest railway stations, similar to Egmore in the city, as it was used to transport military and food materials, which were stocked in one of the biggest warehouses of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) located in the area.
The commuters using the railway station want Southern Railway to first remove the overgrown vegetation from around the station and also coordinate with the Defence Department to create a safe and secure access path from residential areas to the railway station.
