Orange alert issued to Theni, 43 vulnerable areas identified

Posted on October 15, 2026 By admin

India Meteorological Department had issued an orange alert to Theni district, prompting official machinery in the district to gear up to tackle any situation, said District Collector V. Sivakrishnamurthy here on Thursday.

The IMD officials had predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall on the Western Ghats on October 16 and 17. Hence, the officials were directed to take stock of vulnerable areas and low-lying habitations. At a review meeting held in this regard, the Collector said there were 43 vulnerable areas across the district. Teams had been formed at multiple levels and first responders identified at block level.

A special control room would be functioning round the clock, and the people could contact 1077 or 04546-261093, the Collector said, adding that 65 relief shelters had been set up for the people, who might need help in the event of heavy downpour.

The Collector visited a few relief shelters and ensured that basic amenities were in place, officials said and added that Tangedco employees Fire and Rescue Services personnel were in constant touch. Highways Department engineers had been told to monitor the ghat sections.

Meanwhile, officials from the Water Resources and Public Works Departments appealed to the people residing near the river course to keep away. The people have also been told to ensure that children do not go out, especially near the water course.
