India hopes to revive WTC fortunes on Sri Lankan shores

A lone crow hopped on the tarpaulin covers spread across the ground. The odd puddle became an impromptu bathing spot before the bird flew away. Soon the sun was a blazing orb and Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill strode towards the pitch.

Gill knelt down and pressed his palms on the surface. The Indian captain then had a discussion with coach Gambhir. Just as Friday wavered between whimsical rains and glorious sunshine, the Galle International Stadium geared up for the first Test pitting Sri Lanka against India here from Saturday.

This two-match series is crucial in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) rankings. Placed fifth, India is hoping to register multiple triumphs and secure a berth in the WTC final. In the rival corner, stationed at the sixth position, Sri Lanka wants to retain its home fortress.

Besides the two Tests in the Emerald Isle, India has two away games in New Zealand and five at home against Australia, next year. The road ahead will be tough but a good start this weekend, could allay nerves in the Indian dressing room.

Gill’s men step in awkwardly after having their home-aura punctured by New Zealand and South Africa. They will draw some cheer from history as India has 22 victories and seven losses besides 17 draws against Sri Lanka. The pitch, though, is expected to have a bias towards the batters before lending a hand to the spinners. It is a template that unites most sub-continental surfaces.

Much would hinge on K.L. Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal laying the base with Devdutt Padikkal and Gill building on that platform. Bowlers need runs on the board to both defend and attack, and the Indian batters have to click in unison. For now, Dhruv Jurel could hold onto his middle-order berth over Sarfaraz Khan.

The key would be the runs that Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja can offer as it would be the cushion ahead of a weak tail. If Gill does step in with three spinners then Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna would be the two pacers. Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and Manav Suthar, if they do combine, would be a left-handed slow headache for the Sri Lankans.

Leading the host, Dhananjaya de Silva needs his batting line-up to flourish. Dinesh Chandimal is still around and in familiar conditions, his fellow batters too could find a toehold. In the oft-repeated Sri Lankan method of using spin to mount an ambush, left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya could be a key player while off-spinner Keshara Nuwantha may make his debut.

Often in Sri Lanka-India clashes, the script would hover between an avalanche of runs and the inexplicable fall of wickets against spin. This series may follow that pattern but more importantly it offers a platform for the young players to strike roots and grow.

India arrived early, won a warm-up fixture in Colombo before reaching this coastal town. Like the waves of the nearby Indian Ocean, Gill’s men have to be relentless. Tests demand this attribute in ample measure.

The teams (from): Sri Lanka: Dhananjaya de Silva (Capt.), Lahiru Udara, Nishan Madushka, Kamindu Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal, Pasindu Sooriyabandara, Sonal Dinusha, Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Ramesh Mendis, Prabath Jayasuriya, Keshara Nuwantha, Milan Rathnayaka, Asitha Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, Vishwa Fernando and Dilshan Madushanka.

India: Shubman Gill (Capt.), K.L. Rahul (Vice-Capt.), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Devdutt Padikkal, Rishabh Pant (wk), Dhruv Jurel, Sarfaraz Khan, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Auqib Nabi, Gurnoor Brar, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar and Saransh Jain.

Match starts at 10 a.m.
