Two pedestrians were killed on the spot after a speeding tipper lorry allegedly rammed them from behind near Venkatagiri village in Sandur taluk of Ballari district on Thursday (August 6) evening.

The deceased have been identified as Kumar, 34, and Manjunath, 38, both residents of Hampinakatte village in Hospet taluk. Both men succumbed to their injuries on the spot.

According to a press release issued by Ballari Superintendent of Police Suman D. Pennekar, the accident occurred near agricultural land belonging to Seethabai on Venkatagiri Road, within the limits of Sandur Police Station.

The tipper lorry was allegedly being driven in a rash and negligent manner when it hit the pedestrians.

A case has been registered at Sandur Police Station under Sections 281 and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 187 of the Motor Vehicles Act. An investigation is under way.

The police have taken the lorry driver into custody and initiated further legal proceedings.

The Superintendent of Police warned owners of mineral transport vehicles to ensure that their vehicles and drivers possess all valid statutory documents. She said stringent legal action would be taken not only against vehicle owners and drivers operating without valid documentation, but also against mining companies that permit transportation of minerals without verifying the required documents.
