Ever been stuck doom scrolling Swiggy because you cannot decide what to eat? Thanks to food delivery apps, we are spoilt for choice — a little too much one might say. Start-up founder Akshay Bhartiya is solving this problem with his new app called Luckd. With this food delivery app, you do not have to select the dishes you want. They deliver surprise mystery bags from popular cafes and restaurants in the city. Here is how it works.

“When I lived in the UK, we had fewer options for delivery, but it was more curated. In India we are bombarded with too many options. What we are building is a marketplace for curated experiences. We are streamlining the options. Think of us like a FirstClub for experiences,“ says Akshay who has an engineering background, and did his MBA from Esade Business School in Barcelona.

Luckd has tied up with bakeries in the HSR Layout and Koramangala area. Users can download the app, and login with their phone number and add their addresses. The app has drops throughout the day, such as breakfast, coffee, or lunch time. Bakeries list their best sellers, or sometimes a chef’s special in these drops. Users cannot see the exact dishes that are in the bag, but details such as allergens and dietary preferences are listed. They are priced around ₹300-₹350. After ordering, the food is delivered to your doorstep in 30 minutes or so. The bag will have a surprise mix of goodies from the cafe.

Luckd has an in-house curator, and has tied up with smaller hidden gems as well as big name popular bakeries. Some cafes you can find on the app are Glen’s Bakehouse, The Humble Pie, Crave Theory and Mary Janes Bakery & Deli. Luckd also has options such as Salad Street Co and Poiee (a restaurant specialising in Goan poee sandwiches).

“We have our own rider fleet. We have delivery drivers on our payroll, and some sourced from a third-party.” To begin with, the app is only available for deliveries in limited areas of the city but looking to expand to Whitefield and Indiranagar. Food safety and quality is a priority for Akshay.

The app is bootstrapped now, and Akshay says he is seeing a lot of retention and repeat customers. The supply is outweighing the demand, so they are building on curating more restaurants. “For people like us who are busy and managing so many other things, we need a smaller number of options. It is like a treat to you every day.” In the future, Luckd wants to move beyond food, and venture into beauty, wellness and outdoor experiences.

Luckd is available on the App Store and Google Play
