New Zealand authorities issued a tsunami warning on Thursday (July 16, 2026) following a 5.9-magnitude quake on the western coast of the South Island, warning people there to “move immediately” to high ground.

People in affected areas should make their way to the “nearest high ground, out of tsunami evacuation zones, or as far inland as possible”, the National Emergency Management Agency said.

The quake ‌was at a depth of ‌53 km (32.93 miles), the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said.

The agency earlier ‌pegged the quake at 5.6, with ‌a depth of 10 km.
