NHAI has completed the construction of Madurai Ring Road connecting Dindigul highway and Tiruchi highway.
Vehicles have started using the greenfield highway that is serving as the second Ring Road for Madurai city providing a direct link between Vadipatti and Thamaraipatti.
“Vehicles that come from Dindigul or Coimbatore region need not enter Madurai city at all to reach Tiruchi highway and vice versa. Those vehicles can take a diversion at Vadipatti and proceed straight to Tiruchi highway at Thamaraipatti. Since the entire stretch of highway has got access-controlled feature, it would provide safe passage for the vehicles,” a NHAI official said.
The Ring Road would cut through Natham Road, Alagarkoil Road and Alanganallur Road.
The project has envisaged provisions for several underpasses and overpasses, flyovers to ensure safe passage of vehicles at major junctions.
Similarly, a wildlife overpass has been constructed at Waguthamalai with proper periphery barricading for the wild animals to cross the highway.
The project that was launched in 2020 got delayed by Covid and then protest by farmers against land acquisition.
Commercial operation of the road constructed at a cost of ₹1,024.66 crore will begin in the next few days.
“The toll plaza located at Ilavankulam near Alanganallur has got four toll gates on either lanes,” he added. Trial of operation of toll plaza is under way.
The entire stretch of 29.66 km has got PTZ cameras under Advanced Traffic Management System to capture any incidents and unauthorised parking.
