The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is working on a development road map covering more than 1,400 sq. km as part of its long-term plan for urban growth, officials said on Saturday.
The eight-point programme was discussed at a recent meeting of the DDA’s advisory council chaired by Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu.
According to officials, the new plan includes transit-oriented development of 207 sq. km while more than 200 sq. km has been earmarked for expansion through land pooling. Existing developed residential areas cover around 700 sq. km., while low-density areas account for 150 sq. km. A riverfront development project of 100 sq. km is also under way in Zone-O – a stretch of the Yamuna floodplain from Wazirabad to Okhla, officials said. In addition, redevelopment of the Old City has been planned over 24 sq. km, the Bungalow Zone across 31 sq. km, and a high-density corridor of 20 sq. km identified to support growth along major transit routes.
During the meeting, officials also identified several urban challenges, including the shortage of affordable housing, the growth of slums and jhuggi jhopri clusters and their relocation and rehabilitation, the long-pending regularisation and redevelopment of unauthorised colonies, development and regulation of Zone-O, urban flooding, urban heat islands, planned development in land pooling and low-density areas, and the deterioration of the city’s heritage.
Reviewing the plan, the L-G said, “Delhi’s growth must be inclusive, sustainable, and future-ready.” Mr. Sandhu also directed the DDA to adopt a zero-tolerance policy against encroachments. Officials briefed him about the ongoing drone survey of the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi to strengthen ground-level detection of encroachments.
