INFIDET, a fishermen development trust submitted a petition to the district administration seeking the upgradation of the upgraded Primary Health Centre (PHC) into a government hospital to better serve residents of the region.
The petition stated that the upgraded PHC in Thoothoor caters not only to the residents of Thoothoor zone, but also people from several neighbouring villages . However, in certain emergency situations including dog-bite cases, patients visiting the health centre are referred to the government hospital in Kuzhithurai for further treatment due to the lack of adequate facilities.
The trust has urged the district administration to upgrade the PHC into a government hospital with all necessary medical facilities to meet the healthcare needs of the local population. The petition further stated that such an upgrade would significantly benefit the residents of the region, particularly fishermen engaged in deep-sea fishing, who often require timely access to advanced medical care.
It further noted that several petitions have been submitted over the years demanding a government hospital in the region. The petition further pointed out that in July 2025, health and rural welfare departments had responded that a proposal for upgrading the PHC into a hospital had been forwarded to the government and was under further action.
Highlighting the urgent need for the improved healthcare infrastructure, INFIDET president Justin Antony emphasised the importance of establishing a government hospital in the region. He urged the district administration to take necessary steps to ensure the upgradation of PHC into a fully functional government hospital.
