Frequent complaints that the popular Thekkadi lake was getting polluted as sewage was being let into the waterbody was solved by the administration on Saturday.

Random checks at the inlet-outlet pipelines from some of the holiday resorts, residences and home-stays revealed that the owners/operators had let the sewage in the lake.

According to the panchayat president M. M. Varghese and secretary R. Ashok Kumar, they carried out check on a random and found that some of the pipelines were illegally let directly into the lake, which polluted the waterbody.

After disconnecting the sewer lines and sealing the illegal pipes with concrete mixer, the only option for the property owners was to collect the sewage and let it into the UGDS. Though the administration had issued notices, the property owners/operators had not given any attention.

Hence, the action was taken with the support of the field staff, they said and added that they would inform the Theni district administration also about the issue soon.

An engineer said that they would carry out door-to-door checks from Kollampallam to Post office junction soon. Also, they found that the Anavaachal canal was also being polluted and notices had been served on the property owners to cooperate, he added.
