As many as 59,535 teachers across Tamil Nadu appeared for the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) paper-I for in-service teachers held on Saturday. While 61,386 candidates had registered to take up the exam, a total of 1,851 candidates were absent. The exam was held in 222 centers.
Speaking to the media, school education secretary B. Chandra Mohan said, “We have done necessary preparations to hold the exam, especially in maintaining the confidentiality and integrity of the question paper. Support from the police in this regard was also taken up.”
According to a press release, a question paper control center has been selected for this examination. A total of 966 people, including four question paper control officers, around 50 department officers, 742 room invigilators, 100 non-teaching officers, 51 primary invigilators, and staff, have been deployed to conduct this examination.
The TET paper-II will be held on Sunday, where a total of 1,67,743 candidates will appear for the exam in 613 centers. In Chennai district, 3,575 candidates had registered to appear for Paper-I in 13 examination centers and 1,02,51 candidates will appear for paper-II in 38 examination centers.
In September 2025, the Supreme Court had ruled that all teachers, except those with less than five years of service, must clear TET to continue in their jobs, with no exceptions even for promotions. In May 2026, the apex court had extended the timeline for acquiring TET qualification by a year.
