Seven ITIs in Puducherry to be developed under PM-SETU scheme

Seven Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in the Union Territory will be developed under the Union government’s Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded ITIs (PM-SETU) scheme for over a period of five years on an outlay of ₹241 crore, said Shashank Parimi, consultant with the Directorate General of Training, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, New Delhi.

Participating in an awareness programme on the scheme for industrialists here, he said the Puducherry government has identified an industry cluster with the Government ITI at Mettupalayam as hub ITI and six others as spoke ITIs for their development under the PM-SETU scheme.

The industry cluster will become a Special Purpose Vehicle governed by a Board of Directors chaired by the Anchor Industry Partner. The funding will be shared by the Centre, Puducherry government and Industry partner in the ratio of 50%, 33% and 17% respectively, he said.

“The SPV could formulate new courses, hire faculty when required and develop the infrastructure of ITI to suit the present day needs of the industry. The SPV will function as a not-for-profit company which means the revenue generated through the scheme will be reinvested towards operational expenses of the scheme itself. The scheme will utilise existing infrastructure, staff and administrative arrangements for the development of the institute as a modern skilling ecosystem,” he said.

Director, Puducherry Skill Development Mission, P. Saravanan said the SPV could function even beyond the mandated five-year period as the project could be extended. On the closure of the project, the entire infrastructure will be transferred back to government control. He urged the industries to participate in the Request for Proposal to become Anchor Industry Partner for the development of ITIs in Puducherry.

Secretary to Government, Labour, P. Smitha and Under Secretary to Government, Labour, S. Sandirakumaran participated in the workshop.
