We have to rethink our T20 strategy: Muzumdar

We have to rethink our T20 strategy: Muzumdar

India’s campaign at the T20 Women’s World Cup came to a disappointing end on Sunday. Again.

The Women in Blue had crashed out of the last T20 World Cup at the league stage in the UAE, too. Coach Amol Muzumdar concedes there is a need for a rethink.

“I think we really have to rethink our strategy in T20 games,” Muzumdar said after India’s defeat in the must-win game against Australia at Lord’s. “We really need to put our heads around and see what combination we are going to play. It didn’t help Shreyanka (Patil) not being there. She would have made a difference on that pitch and ground.

“We also need to be a little aggressive with the bat, and we could have maybe 15-20 runs as cushion,” he said. “But, if you look at our bowling attack, it is been very inexperienced as far as international cricket is concerned. Give us 18 months and this attack will be a different one.”

About not sending Richa Ghosh earlier, he said: “We had Richa in the dugout, and we wanted her to go out, and I thought that was a call needed to be taken at that time, and we just took it.

“It was the last over, we had Richa in the dugout. I think it was best for her to go out there and smash a few balls, but she ended up facing only one ball. But so be it. That was the nature of the game. And at that time, we felt that that was the right call.”

Muzumdar has full faith in Harmanpreet Kaur’s captaincy. “It is up to the selectors to decide the captain,” he said. “My short and sweet answer would be yes”.
