Good wind energy generation helps in evacuating power from T.N. to other States through power exchanges

Good wind energy generation helps in evacuating power from T.N. to other States through power exchanges

CHENNAI

The picking up of renewable energy, particularly wind energy has helped the State evacuate and sell electricity during the month of June this year.

Though power managers have given a scientific term to wind energy as ‘infirm’ power, indicating a power source which is undependable, the State has achieved a wind generation capacity of 9,500 mega watt (MW). Therefore, Tamil Nadu has been able to showcase itself as power surplus with the renewable energy generated being sold through the power exchanges in June this year. Also, wind power generation in the State has crossed the 5,000-MW mark this month.

A senior official of the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) said wind season picks up in the month of May. This year, the wind generation which crossed 4,500 MW in May, has crossed 5,000 MW and 5,500 MW of wind energy was produced regularly during the middle week of June. Similarly, nearly 1,700 MW power was generated during the day time cycle from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The senior official further said more than 25% of the peak power demand was met through wind energy and the surplus wind energy generated was being sold through energy bourses.

Data available in the grid details of State Load Despatch Centre (SLDC) shows that on an average nearly 100 million units are generated through renewable energy sources of wind and solar, out of the total consumption of 400 MUs consumed daily in the State. Of the 100 MUs generated, more than 60 MUs are being sold, the official added.
