A video clip showing Tamil Nadu Social Welfare Minister K. Jegadeshwari questioning an official as to why her name was printed below that of Industries Minister S. Keerthana for a government function in Virudhunagar, was widely shared on social media on Friday.
The event was to present prizes to ‘silambam’ winners by the Social Welfare Department for which Ms Jegadeshwarii is the Minister.
The invitation, which was sent to media persons and the banners put up in the function had the name of Ms Keerthana on top followed by Ms Jegadeshwari.
On seeing this, the Social Welfare Minister was upset and questioned officials about it. She was heard saying “I am the Minister in charge of the district,” and also added that her name should have been printed on top.
As per the Cabinet inter-se seniority list, Ms Keerthana is placed 10th, while Ms Jegadeshwari is ranked 23rd.
When contacted, a senior official from the Directorate of Information and Public Relations said “it was an oversight”. They had spoken to the Minister and expressed regret, the official said.
Later in the day, during another function held at the Government Hospital in Virudhunagar, Minister Jagadeeswari fainted. Officials said that suddenly she complained of uneasiness and fainted. A team of doctors led by Dean Jaisingh conducted medical examination. Sources said that she was kept under observation for an hour. After the Minister regained consciousness, the doctors discharged her stating that she was stable.
