Tesla plans Supercharger network in Hyderabad, bets on home charging to drive India’s EV future

Tesla plans to roll out its proprietary Supercharger network in Hyderabad as part of its strategy to connect major Indian cities through dedicated charging corridors, with the company maintaining that reliable charging and home charging, rather than simply increasing the number of public charging stations, will determine the pace of electric vehicle (EV) adoption in India.

Guided walkarounds for customers to experience vehicles

The announcement came as Tesla on Wednesday (June 17, 2026) opened its fifth Experience Center in India at Knowledge City, Hyderabad. The facility showcased the newly launched 2026 Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive and the six-seater Model Y L. “Customers can experience the vehicles through guided walkarounds and interactive product demonstrations by Tesla Advisors,” said Sharad Agarwal, Tesla India country head.

Tesla currently operates five Supercharger stations

Speaking on the sidelines of the launch, a senior company executive said Tesla currently operates five Supercharger stations in India, housing a total of 20 Supercharger connectors in India and intends to establish Superchargers in Hyderabad. Charging corridors linking Delhi, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad are expected to cover nearly 80% of the country.

One of the biggest questions prospective buyers have are about charging infrastructure. The executive said that the focus should not merely be on increasing the number of charging stations but on ensuring they function reliably. “Home charging would remain central to EV ownership, with every Tesla vehicle supplied with a wall connector,” the executive added.

Deliveries and after-sales operations

To support customers in Telangana, the company has also commenced deliveries and after-sales operations from its facility in the Bollaram Industrial Area. Hyderabad already has a body shop and service facility, which also functions as a delivery centre.

The executive also said that unlike conventional automobile manufacturers, Tesla does not prescribe periodic maintenance schedules, adding that owners may not need to physically visit service centres for four to five years. “Many issues can be diagnosed and rectified remotely. In cases where physical intervention is required, Tesla’s mobile service teams can visit customers,” they added.

Describing Tesla as an artificial intelligence and technology company rather than merely an automobile manufacturer, the executive said the company’s vehicles were ‘AI on four wheels’.

The company believes software is one of its biggest differentiators. More than 250 features were added globally during 2024 through over-the-air updates, allowing vehicles to continuously evolve after purchase. Recent additions include Grok, Tesla’s artificial intelligence assistant. Software-driven improvements mean customers do not have to wait for a new model to access new features, unlike the traditional approach followed by many carmakers.

Priced at ₹50.89 lakh

The 2026 Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive, priced at ₹50.89 lakh, offers seating for up to five passengers, 2,138 litres of storage space, a range of up to 500 km and accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in 5.9 seconds. Deliveries are scheduled to commence in July.

Six-seater Model Y L from ₹61.99 lakh

The six-seater Model Y L, priced from ₹61.99 lakh, offers a claimed range of up to 681 km (WLTP), acceleration from 0 to 100 kmph in 5 seconds and cargo space of up to 2,539 litres.
