The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday (June 10) alleged that demolitions continued in the O-zone of the Yamuna floodplains despite assurances from Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.

Ms. Gupta on Tuesday (June 9) said that no existing structure in the city’s O-zone, which houses an estimated 15 lakh people across 91 unauthorised colonies and nearly a dozen villages, will be demolished.

AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj said lakhs of people were suffering due to a lack of legal protection and demanded that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Central and Delhi governments amend existing laws to help them. “The CM used to say that the slums would not be demolished, but on the same day she made such statements, bulldozers were deployed in slum areas. Even today, the government says no action will be taken in the O-zone, but on Tuesday itself, bulldozers were used on residential structures there,” he said.

The government did not respond to the claims till the time of going to press.
