The father of the RG Kar victim on Saturday (October 17, 2026) expressed his dissatisfaction after the Supreme Court of India granted bail to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The mother of the victim is a Bharatiya Janata Party MLA who had joined politics in an attempt to get justice for her daughter.
“If needed, we will fight against this government, our own government as well. We are still on the same road for justice. Justice is our primary concern. We may now be in the government, but we are not scared to speak against the government,” the father of the 31-year-old deceased female doctor told local media personnel. He added that he will take all necessary steps to get justice.
However, mother of the victim, Ratna Debnath, who is the MLA from Panihati, the home constituency of the victim has not made any comments on the issue.
Ghosh was arrested by the Crime Investigation Bureau (CBI) in relation to alleged financial irregularities at the hospital. However, the top court granted him bail on Thursday (October 15) due to the slow pace of the investigation and two years of incarceration.
Meanwhile, doctors‘ associations in West Bengal have condemned the Supreme Court’s decision.
“The Supreme Court’s grant of bail to Sandip Ghosh, amid the prolonged delay in the RG Kar case, is deeply distressing for everyone demanding justice for Abhaya. The CBI & ED’s failure to examine most of the witnesses over more than two years raises serious questions about the pace and effectiveness of the investigation. We demand accountability from the investigating agency and a time-bound, day-to-day trial. Justice for Abhaya requires an end to institutional impunity and the prosecution of all those responsible,” Dr Subarna Goswami, a senior leader of the RG Kar movement and member of the Association of Health Service Doctors, West Bengal told The Hindu on Saturday.
Speaking on the issue, BJP State president Samik Bhattacharya said that bail does not mean innocence. “Law does not depend on emotions. The people’s court has already proved that they were associated with the incident. But there are many technical issues in the court of law, and he may have gotten bail due to that,” Mr Bhattacharya said.
