The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is exploring the creation of the Bengaluru Global Water Innovation Network (BGWIN), an international platform to place Bengaluru as a global water innovation hub.

As part of the proposal, the BWSSB plans to establish a Centre of Excellence with a dedicated Technology Innovation Hub focusing on areas such as artificial intelligence-driven predictive analytics, smart metering systems, decentralised water treatment technologies, water reuse solutions and advanced utility management practices. The proposed centre would serve as a collaborative platform.

The proposed network is aligned with ‘Brand Bengaluru’ and aims to address emerging challenges in the water and wastewater sector. The move attempts to bring together water utilities, government agencies, universities, research institutions, industry leaders, start-ups, investors and civil society organisations, BWSSB Chairman V. Ram Prasath Manohar said.

A key feature would be the pilot-scale testing of emerging technologies before wider deployment across the city, Mr. Manohar said, adding that this approach would help reduce investment risks and improve adoption rates.

The initiative will improve urban water management in Bengaluru by promoting innovation, using technology adoption, facilitating international collaboration and creating an ecosystem to address challenges arising from rapid urbanisation, climate change and resource scarcity.

Mr. Manohar said the long-term objective is to establish Bengaluru as a globally recognised centre for water innovation and a model city for urban water security. The network is expected to support research, technology validation and capacity building, while contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals related to clean water and sustainable cities.
