Songs, gifts, sweets, and flowers marked the first day of the new academic year as hundreds of children across Ernakulam district were accorded a colourful reception on Monday.
A festive mood prevailed on campuses as teachers and non-teaching staff welcomed children as part of ‘Praveshanolsavam’, the joyous reception offered at the start of the new academic year. Children were given caps made of chart paper decorated with images of fruits and letters. Though some of them broke into tears, teachers comforted and reassured them.
Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Anoop Jacob, who inaugurated the district-level ‘Praveshanolsavam’ at Government Higher Secondary School, Pezhaykkappilli, said that all schools needed to get basic infrastructure, irrespective of the total headcount of children in each institution. “By ensuring basic facilities, we will pave way for the enrolment of more children into schools,” he said.
He added that the modernisation of primary schools in the district would be ensured by utilising the assistance available under various sources, including corporate social responsibility schemes. “The United Democratic Front government is committed to making creative changes in tune with the requirements of modern times in the State’s education sector,” he said.
The Minister distributed name slips carrying messages on cleanliness to students. Students who had won academic laurels were felicitated on the occasion. Mathew Kuzhalnadan, MLA, presided. Ernakulam district panchayat president K.G. Radhakrishnan delivered the keynote address.
V.E. Abdul Ghafoor, Minister for Fisheries, inaugurated the district-level ‘Praveshanolsavam’ of BUDS schools under the Ernakulam Kudumbashree District Mission at the BUDS Special School for Mentally Challenged in Eloor. Laiji Sajeevan, chairperson of Eloor municipality, presided.
