State-owned oil-marketing companies (OMCs) have been asked to maintain reserves of liquified petroleum gas (LPG) to meet a minimum of thirty days of demand, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary at the Union Petroleum Ministry told reporters at the bi-weekly briefing about the situation in West Asia here on Friday (May 29, 2026).

“Oil-marketing companies have been asked to work out [such that] they have a minimum of thirty days for reserves for LPG, and they are working on it,” she informed, adding that OMCs have also been asked to expand that for crude oil as well.

Ms. Sharma also told reporters that the demand for the bottled hydrocarbon gas presently stands at about 72 Thousand Metric Tonnes (TMT) with about 50-52 TMT being produced domestically.

“The demand for LPG is also impacted by seasonal variations,” she stated, “Therefore, after demand management [measures] by the government and also because of the impact of the season, right now the demand is around 72 TMT and we are producing 50-52 TMT in-house in our domestic refineries.”
