I never questioned my abilities: Indian-American golfer Manav after qualifying for U.S. Open

Indian-American golfer Manav Shah might just be enjoying his second wind. Eleven years after turning pro, Manav is set for his Major championship debut after sealing a spot at the U.S. Open in New York next month. The 34-year-old, whose father hails from Gujarat and mother from Maharashtra, is the first player from the Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL) tour to make it to a Major since its inception last year.

Self-belief and his wife’s unwavering support made Manav’s “dream” work.

“A Major is the highest peak of our game, so I am honoured to have earned my way into that event. I have always had the belief, and I feel that I have had the game. There have been a lot of peaks and valleys over the years, but I never questioned my abilities,” Manav told The Hindu from the USA during a virtual conversation on Tuesday.

“Working on my mind as I mature into this second breath has been of huge help. My wife has played a big part in this journey; she was my caddie in the qualifying event. She has been fully supportive, encouraging me to continue chasing my dream. She insists that I stay calm and be myself. That is something I am starting to do a lot more. I need not be anyone other than Manav Shah; If I am Manav Shah, I can achieve what I want to,” he added.

Manav felt that qualification for the U.S. Open could be the foundation for bigger things ahead. “I am excited to tee off in three weeks (June 18). How I play there will obviously matter, but I think that it could be a springboard for the future. There is going to be validation with this.”

It is now up to Manav to solve the “amazing puzzle”.
