The Andhra Pradesh Prisons Department, in collaboration with the Skill Development Institute (SDI), Visakhapatnam, launched an IT-based skill development course titled “Office Assistant” at the Visakhapatnam Central Jail on Thursday. The programme was inaugurated by Visakhapatnam District Collector M. Abhishikth Kishore.

The initiative aims to equip inmates with industry-oriented IT and office management skills as part of their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

Officials said that the first batch would comprise of 30 inmates, primarily remand prisoners, with particular focus on young inmates involved in NDPS-related cases. The two-month course will offer practical training in computer applications, office administration, digital communication, handling office equipment and employability skills. Participants who complete the programme successfully will receive a certification from SDI Visakhapatnam.

The course also seeks to improve digital literacy, communication skills, workplace discipline and self-confidence among inmates to enhance their employment prospects after release.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kishore appreciated the efforts of the Prisons Department and SDI in introducing reform-oriented programmes for inmates. He said skill development initiatives in prisons could play a significant role in transforming lives and creating constructive opportunities for rebuilding the future.

The Collector later interacted with the inmates participating in the programme and visited the prison industries and skill development sections within the jail premises.
