Delhi Government threatens to take over Janakpuri school over ‘lapses’

The Directorate of Education (DoE) has sent a show-cause notice to the private school in Janakpuri, where a three-year-old girl was raped allegedly by a 57-year-old caretaker, officials said on Monday (May 11, 2026).

In its May 8 notice, the DoE threatened to take over the school’s management if the response to the issues raised, including nursery classes being operated out of a separate plot not part of the space allotted by the Delhi Development Authority, is not satisfactory.

“Our team is currently evaluating the issues at the school. If lapses are found, the department will take over the management of the school,” Education Minister Ashish Sood told The Hindu on Monday (May 11, 2026).

Meanwhile, relatives of the victim gathered outside the school on Monday (May 11, 2026) and demanded strict punishment for the accused. The sexual assault took place on the school premises on April 30. The accused was arrested the next day and granted bail on May 7. The Aam Aadmi Party has questioned the government’s “silence” and an alleged bid to “suppress” the issue.

‘Separate premises’

The notice read: “It has further been reported that the said separate premises are situated approximately one km from the main recognised school campus, and the students of nursery and pre-primary classes are being apparently shifted and accommodated without approval/permission from the competent authority.”

The DoE said the school had failed to maintain adequate surveillance and monitoring systems, highlighting the “non-installation of CCTV cameras at critical and sensitive locations, thereby violating safety norms and child protection requirements”.

Such lapses prima facie constitute violations of the provisions under the Delhi School Education Act and Rules (DSEAR), 1973, including failure to ensure safety, welfare, discipline, and proper management of the institution as mandated, said the Education Department.

The school management has been asked to explain why action should not be initiated against it. The show-cause notice also stated that failure to submit a satisfactory reply will result in the withdrawal of recognition or the takeover of management, as per the DSEAR Act.
